Buying gifts can be expensive, whether it is for a birthday or at Christmas, we always end up spending so much money at special times of the year. If you have a large family, it can be even worse. Here, we will look at great ways to save money when buying presents for friends and family.

If you know you have a lot of gifts to buy, it is of course a great idea to save up throughout the year. You could join a saving scheme or buy vouchers every month and save them up for Christmas, either to give as gifts themselves or to buy gifts for others. Alternatively, you could set up a savings account especially for gifts. If you choose the right type of account, you might even be able to earn some interest giving you free cash to buy more gifts with.

A really great way to save money if you have a lot of people on your gift list is to do a gift exchange, also known as a secret Santa. Each person puts their name in a hat, along with a few gift ideas if you want, such as favorite authors or singers or clothes styles for example. Everyone takes turns to draw one name, and this is the only person you need to buy for. You can also set a spending limit so everyone gets the same value gift and you don’t have to spend hundreds.

You could also try making gifts at home rather than buying them. People of all ages really appreciate a home-made gift. For children, just about anything goes – why not try making something with their favourite TV character for example? Finding cool gifts for 9 year old girls and above are a bit more difficult, although you can still find something great which won’t cost the earth. You could try making them a piece of jewelry or something to wear, as girls this age are usually starting to become more interested in fashion.
